Dinner with the Whiskas

Tuesday night we invited Bambo and Mia Whiskas to dinner at our house. Bambo Whiskas is the gentleman who takes care of the house we are staying in. He is the nicest guy. His wife is very sweet. We try to always have them for dinner at least once while we are here. Since this was Leslie's first visit to Malawi, the Whiska's showed up with Malawian food! They brought nsima (the ground maize dish they eat at every meal), rice, greens and chicken. We had prepared an American meal - well, Italian American - spaghetti and garlic bread. Of course, the power went out before we finished cooking, so once again we reverted to the loaner propane cooker, but it worked out fine. So much food! So Leslie and I ate Malawian food, the Whiskas ate American food and Jose ate some of both! When the power was out, the Whiskas had walked to our house in the dark. They live on the same compound but it is walking in Africa, in pretty much total darkness. Since there are snakes around (not as many this time of year), we were concerned that they traveled on foot in the dark. I had two extra flashlights that operate by squeezing the handle - no batteries needed (thank you Marvin Cloud!!!). So the second picture is of them, being thrilled to have a light. Bambo Whiskas said they have no extra lights in their house - they just sit in the dark and wait for the power to come back. Now at least they can find their way around, and be on the watch for snakes! The things we take for granted!!!
