Today was another beautiful day in Malawi. We ran errands this morning - typical Malawian style, we had to go to 6 shops to find a card reader for my camera (OK, my fault, I left mine at home)... however, we were successful and it was only moderately expensive. We all spent the afternoon in the clinic. It was slow (patient wise), but Jose made himself useful 'fixing' things - BP cuffs, an oxygen concentrator, checked out the antiquated monitors; had a meeting with the clinic manager about the ambulance (on order), and arranging CPR classes for the clinic personnel. Leslie worked with the nurses, encouraging them to do all the vital signs, not just BP, axillary temp and weight. She also got them started on writing chief complaint, medications they are taking, medical history, etc. etc. The nurses seemed happy to be a more active part of the medical team. The evening was lovely when we came home, and Jose made friends with the Youngs, the couple in the other half of the guest house duplex where we are staying. They have been long term missionaries, but are now doing 6 month 'stints'. After meeting them, we started dinner and lost the power. The Youngs graciously loaned us their propane stove. We were actually on our way to the home of the man who works in the house, Mr. Whiskas, to borrow his traditional charcoal cooker when they offered their stove. They recommended we set in the sink in case it tipped over. We managed to finish dinner - spaghetti, chicken, sauce and pan fried garlic bread. The picture is of Jose using the stove, the bottom pan is the chicken and in the top pan he is melting butter for the garlic bread. Ha, ha, an African double boiler! We did manage to get dinner cooked, ate by candle light and then - BOOM - the power came on again. It has come and gone a couple times this evening, so I think it is time to say good night!
